Egg Drop Activity

The Sky Is Falling! Just Kidding! That’s our eggs falling from great heights! We are seeing how high we can drop an egg from without damaging it. Get your creative juices flowing because you may have to think outside the box for this one!

This activity is pulled from our Virtual ExCEL Camps happening summer of 2020! While these activities are written to fit into the larger lesson plan of the camp themes, you can complete them with your little one at any time. Learn more about our Virtual ExCEL Summer Camp here!

Hypothesis:

What features of your device will keep your egg safe?

Materials: 

• 1 egg
• household materials that can be used to create a device to hold the egg (e.g. small box, cotton, paper bag, bubble-wrap)

Procedure: Children will create a device that will keep an egg in place safely. It will be released from a high height and needs to not crack once it hits the ground.

1. Gather materials
2. Create a device from your materials list that will keep an egg from cracking
3. Once your device is created drop your egg (or ball) from a high height and see if you have created something that can withstand the fall

Conclusion:

Wow! That was so much fun! Did you hypothesize correctly and use the right materials the first time? There are so many variables in this science experiment! Your egg could have bounced, broken or cracked!
