This handsome keepsake book describes the rich history of a unique American company.
A richly illustrated history book celebrating the 150th anniversary of the American Printing House for the Blind, History in the Making explores how an organization with one printing press in borrowed space in a school basement grew to occupy most of a city block and became a national icon for generations of students, teachers, and adult consumers.
APH eventually grew to become the world’s largest nonprofit organization creating educational, workplace, and independent living products and services for people who are visually impaired. APH’s role expanded far beyond the creation of tactile books, including the manufacture of large print and audio materials, educational programs, kits and supplies, and tools and devices for daily living.
History in the Making places the birth, growth, and development of the American Printing House for the Blind into the context of changing attitudes about people with disabilities. This book is filled with inspiring stories of people who made a difference: the blind promoter from Mississippi, civic leaders who guided the fledgling organization, pioneer educators and students who struggled to develop standardized methods of reading and writing, and managers and workers who invented innovative methods to make the written word available to those who could not see.
Regular Print Edition:
Packed with rare details about the origins of APH, this book features rich photography, reproductions of tactile pages embossed from vintage printing plates, and an accessible audio book version on CD read by APH narrator Jack Fox. This 180-page hardbound book was designed by nationally recognized graphic artist Julius Friedman and features color photography by Geoffrey Carr.
