Max’s teacher presents his Flag Routine object symbol in the now container of his object calendar Sensory Learning Kit: Max’s Flag Routine

The APH YouTube channel provides examples of sensorimotor routines based on the methodology of the Sensory Learning Kit. To help teams understand what is happening in these videos, we provide lesson plans for each routine. The library currently contains five videos. The article published last spring in the Journal of Visual Impairments and Blindness describing the results of a case study research project on the effects of routine-based instruction contains the lessons plans for the Isaiah snack and Freddie brush hair routines. You will find Aarna’s lesson plan in Closing the Gap’s on-line journal, Solutions, also published last spring. A future blog will include the lesson plan for Adam’s case study routine.

The latest routine to join this library is Max’s Flag Routine. In this routine, Max learns new cognitive, motor, and visual efficiency skills. This routine contains the elements essential for good sensorimotor stage learning. He works hard because he loves the social interaction with his partner this routine provides. He actively participates in the steps of the routine. Supports enhance his performance after he does his part.

Max’s Flag Routine Lesson Plan

Learner’s Steps Accommodations/Supports Goals
1.     Look at object symbol in now container. Wait 5 seconds for visual fixation after movement and tapping. Visually observe object.

2.      Go to activity area. Use a blue screen for visual complexity reduction.
3.     Get little flag from now container. Wait 5 seconds for initiation— Max extending fingers or moving hand toward container. Reach to obtain object.
4.     Watch teacher wave her big flag. Sit close enough so Max can feel airflow of waving flag. Observe action visually modeled by partner.
5.     Feel teacher wave little flag. Sit behind Max. Tactually model action using hand-under-hand support. Observe action tactually modeled by partner.
6.     My turn. Wave little flag while teacher waves her big flag. Use hand-under-hand support to help Max reach for the little flag. After he grips it, start waving the big flag and singing. Wait 5 seconds for Max to join by waving his flag. Imitate action modeled by partner.
7.     Put little flag in finished container Move and tap container to establish visual attention. Give Max hand under-hand-support to put flag in container. Observe action visually and tactually modeled by partner.
