Did you enjoy listening to different music and making your own instrument? Try a simple music water jar activity.

Appropriate Age Range: Any

Materials Needed:

  • glass jars or cups
  • water
  • spoon
  • Measuring cups (optional)

Vocab:

Try looking these words up if your child is unfamiliar with them: Loud, quiet, louder quieter

Activity:

Make sure all your jars are the same size!

Fill each jar with a different volume of water. You can use measuring cups of varying sizes to pour the different amounts of water in. If you’d like to use food coloring to distinguish the jars, feel free!

Use a metal spoon to tap each of the jars.

How did the jars sound different? What happens if you change the kind of jar? The kind of spoon? The volume of water? Can you tap the jars to make the different sounds create a pattern?
